Whirlpool Warranty Check: How to Tell If Your Appliance Is Still Covered
By Andrew Norman, EPA 608 Certified Technician ยท Updated July 2026
Before you pay for a repair on a Whirlpool appliance, it's worth five minutes to answer one question: is this thing still under warranty? Plenty of people write a check for a repair that Whirlpool would have covered โ and plenty of others waste an afternoon on hold trying to claim coverage on a machine that aged out years ago. Either mistake is avoidable. Here's how to run a Whirlpool warranty check with nothing but the numbers on the appliance itself.
Start here:
Paste your serial number into the decoder to get your Whirlpool appliance's manufacture date in seconds โ the anchor for any warranty check.
Step 1: Find the Model and Serial Number
Every Whirlpool appliance carries a rating plate with two numbers: the model number (what the machine is) and the serial number (your specific unit, with the manufacture date encoded in it). Where to look:
- Refrigerators: inside the fresh-food compartment, on a side wall or ceiling near the top โ see our refrigerator-specific guide for every fridge style.
- Washers & dryers: around the door frame or rim, behind the door, or on the back panel.
- Dishwashers: on the edge of the door or the side of the tub, visible when the door is open.
- Ranges & ovens: around the oven-door frame, in the drawer area, or behind the control panel trim.
- Microwaves: inside the cavity on the left wall, or on the back of the unit.
Take a photo of the whole plate โ you'll need both numbers for the steps below, and again if you end up scheduling service.
Step 2: Decode the Manufacture Date
Warranty coverage runs from the purchase date โ but most owners don't have the receipt anymore. That's where the serial number earns its keep: Whirlpool encodes the plant, year, and week of manufacture in the serial's leading characters, and the same system covers Maytag, KitchenAid, and Amana. The manufacture date sets the outer limit of any possible coverage โ an appliance built in 2019 cannot still be inside a one-year standard warranty in 2026, no receipt required.
The encoding is plant-specific and easy to misread by hand, so don't guess: paste the serial number into the free decoder and it returns the manufacture month and year instantly. Our Whirlpool serial number lookup guide walks through the format in detail if you want to understand what each character means.
Step 3: Know the Standard Coverage โ Then Verify
Most Whirlpool major appliances carry a one-year limited warranty covering parts and labor for defects in materials and workmanship. Some product lines add longer coverage on specific components โ sealed refrigeration systems on refrigerators and drive motors or tubs on certain laundry machines are common examples, often on a parts-only basis after year one. Exact terms vary by model and purchase date, so treat the one-year rule as the baseline, not the final word.
To verify your unit specifically, enter the model and serial number on Whirlpool's official product registration and support site. That lookup reflects your actual coverage โ including any extended service plan tied to the unit โ and will also surface open recalls, which Whirlpool handles at no cost regardless of warranty status.
What If the Warranty Has Expired?
Then the manufacture date becomes a repair-versus-replace question instead of a coverage question. A typical major appliance lasts roughly 10โ13 years; once a unit is past about 80% of that and facing a major repair โ a compressor, a sealed-system leak, a drum bearing โ the math usually favors replacement, while cheap fixes like thermostats, fans, and gaskets can still make sense on older machines. Our repair-or-replace guide covers how to run that math.
The Fast Way
Serial number โ decoder โ manufacture date โ compare against the one-year baseline โ confirm on Whirlpool's site if you're close to the line. Five minutes, and you'll know whether that repair call is on Whirlpool's dime or yours.
